Pack-225 Parents Guide
The Pack Relies Heavily on Parent Participation. |
This is a Cub Scout Pack, not a Boy Scout Troop. The boys still need guidance and assistance at den meetings and parental involvement is strongly encouraged. We also welcome any additional help that parents can provide. The number and scope of activities depends on the help given by parents. We ask that those who can, to please volunteer. There are many opportunities for helping out by supporting or heading up activities. (See: Help Wanted supplement). In addition, specific training and resources are available through the council for interested leaders. |
Organization Structure, Leadership |
The “Pack” is all of the boys (boys, parents, and leaders). The Pack is the main organization entity and the level where many activities are carried out. Pack Meetings are held monthly during the school year (usually on 3rd Friday of the month). These take place in the church auditorium. The Pack is led by the Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster. The Pack is divided into different age groups. They are as follows:
Tiger Cubs - age 6-7 (1st grade) These groups, or Dens, meet separately. Den meetings may be held in the Birch or the Den leader’s home. Dens usually meet outside the pack on two or three weeks of the month. They are lead by Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders. In addition for the Tiger Den, each Tiger Cub works one-on-one with a “parent Partner”. There is usually a Mentor to help them get started. Regular meeting attendance is important to keep up with what’s going on. There is a “No School, No Meeting” rule for Den & Pack meetings. This is usually due to holidays and weather. The Pack Committee carries out planning and administrative functions. The Pack Committee has meetings once a month. Meetings are open to everyone. Leaders and any interested parents are encouraged to attend and be involved. They are currently held at the home of the Pack Committee Chairperson. Cure of Ars R.C. Church is our “Chartered Organization”. They provide the facilities for our Pack. Their representative is a member of the “Pack Committee” (typically hands-off). Pack-225 is a member of the Pequott District of the Boys Scouts of America -Theodore Roosevelt Council, Nassau County. Many activities are organized on this level including Adult Leader training. District “Roundtable” meetings take place on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at Massapequa High School unless otherwise notified. Council headquarters and the “Scout Shop” are located at 544 Broadway, Massapequa, NY 11758. (516) 797-7600. |

Scouting Activities, Achievements |
Scouting activities focus on the boys. We try to help the boys develop and grow. Den level activities center on earning achievements while having FUN. Each Tiger meeting focuses on a theme such as community, safety, etc. They earn Tiger Paws. New den members are encouraged to earn their Bobcat badge in the fall with the help of their parent. This teaches the basics of Cub scouting such as the Scout Promise. The remainder of the year is used to earn achievements and, eventually, the rank of their den (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos). Gold and silver arrow points can then be earned to the end of the year. Webelos can also earn “The Arrow of Light” award, the only award that follows them into Boy Scouting. |
Uniform, Badges |
Uniforms are encouraged. They signify belonging to a group. They can be worn to school on den and pack meeting days. Tigers and Cub Scouts have blue uniforms. Webelos can use the blue, or switch to Boy Scout Beige uniform colors if a new uniform is needed. Uniform supplies can be purchased at the Scout Shop in Massapequa or Mineola. Some items can also be ordered through the JC Penny’s catalog. Insignia is needed as well. The pack will supply award-type badges. Cubs advancing to Boy Scouts are encouraged to leave their uniforms (badges removed) in case a new scout would like it. New Scouts require Scout Handbooks available at the Scout shop.

Other |
As part of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) we will follow their rules and policies as best we can. While we try meet to the needs of every individual, remember that the pack committee must consider all the boys in the pack, not just one den. All money raised or collected is to be turned in to the treasurer for accountability purposes. Receipts are required for any purchases made. No alcohol or drugs are to be consumed during scouting activities/events. Smoking is discouraged and should only be done away from the immediate area of cub activities. Please let us know if there are any concerns. We want to keep the lines of communication open. Our email address is pack225@msn.com
